Following on from our Career Tales evening in January when we looked at three in-demand jobs, we are now delighted to bring you an event dedicated to finding and winning your next job.
Our four speakers this evening will share with us their respective tips on job-searching and applying for jobs. They will also cover the career benefits of serving on CILIP committees and undertaking CILIP Professional Registration.

Speaker biographies
Simon (he/him) is the Managing Director of CB Resourcing, the knowledge management and LIS recruitment firm. Before establishing CB Resourcing in 2014, Simon worked for a number of research providers and consultancies serving customers in the information services market. Simon was President of SLA Europe in 2019, the European chapter of the Special Libraries Association.
Deborah Varenna
Deborah (she/her) is the Directorate Co-ordinator for the Disclosure and Barring Service's Knowledge Management team. She also chairs CILIP's LGBTQ+ Network Committee. For this Careers Evening, she will talk to you through her job-seeking process and give tips for when it seems there are no Library, Knowledge, or Information jobs.
Stuart Temple
Stuart (he/him) began working for Libraries NI in 2013 whilst studying English Literature. Seeking to progress as a librarian he embarked on a Library and Information Management post graduate course. Here he was exposed to CILIP and all it offers us library professional. Realising he could potentially contribute, he joined the CILIP Ireland committee as the Representative for Students and New Professionals. This has provided me with opportunities to meet and learn from interesting and experienced individuals from different library backgrounds and many chances to contribute to different projects in the sphere of libraries.
Loraine Pearson
Loraine (she/her) is a Chartered Senior Knowledge Manager working for water company United Utilities based at the company’s head office in Warrington. She leads a team of knowledge specialists in the Engineering Directorate.
She has worked there for over 20 years gaining experience in the court and technical training teams, project delivery lead as a change manager and developing long term strategies in the asset management team.
Loraine also volunteers her counselling skills at the NHS oncology unit in St Helens, supporting families and nurses with their cancer experience.
Loraine was part of the inaugural KM Chartership cohort. The recognition of this has enabled Loraine to devise her own role centred around creating United Utilities’ KM strategy.
