Information and Knowledge Management is a crucial role in public and third sector organisations. It is the process of researching, gathering, organizing, storing and providing information within an organization and sharing knowledge through connecting people and facilitating communication and collaborations. These activities increasingly involve working with systems, some roles specialize in the storage design and findability of information which involves development of metadata standards, information architecture and taxonomy groups. Other roles can be more people to people or people to technology focused facilitating the communication of knowledge and expertise between individuals, groups or between individuals and systems. The role can also involve creating policies for information governance and training end users in information literacy or on information systems.
This role is usually carried out by an Information Professional or Librarian and can be delivered in a number of sectors including universities, charities, public libraries, regulatory bodies and government departments.
Many professionals hold specialized qualifications and are members of professional bodies such as Chartered Institute of Librarians and Information Professionals (CILIP) or SLA.
In addition to the important technical skills needed for a role there are a number of essential soft skills that are equally important. In the public and third sector roles can be varied and multi-disciplinary. The ability to adapt and shift between different specialisms in order to adapt to a wide range of user abilities and diverse user needs is very important. Good interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of internal clients, a focus on excellent customer service are all sought after soft skills in information professional and librarian job roles. Working in an academic library specifically can require the ability to build strong lasting relationships with internal clients and end users and sometimes develop a detailed understanding of particular subject areas.
